What if stylists never had to do another “chemo cut?”

Hair loss is one of the most feared and traumatic side effects of chemotherapy. Approximately 8% of female patients decline potentially life-saving chemo due to fear of hair loss. An option for these patients exists. It’s called Scalp Cooling. HairToStay is a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing access to Scalp Cooling and financial assistance to those in need.

What is Scalp Cooling?

Scalp cooling is a revolutionary FDA-cleared treatment used during chemo, proven to significantly reduce hair loss. It works by decreasing the temperature of the scalp by a few degrees before, during and after the administration of chemotherapy. This reduces the blood flow to hair follicles which may prevent or minimize hair loss. Although it has been used successfully in Europe and other countries for decades, Scalp Cooling is a relatively new option in the United States and only just beginning to be covered by public and private insurance. Here’s how Scalp Cooling works…

90% of patients report a positive impact on their sense of wellbeing after receiving the treatment.

CP in Action

In honor of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Colorproof is partnering with HairToStay to raise awareness and funds for their cause. We’re donating 20% of all colorproof.com Thicken Collection sales to HairToStay. In addition, we are gifting a Scalp Exfoliating Brush with every Thicken product transaction to help incentivize purchase. As part of our Guiding Principles, ‘Colorproof Cares,’ we are thrilled to be able to help raise awareness and funds to support HairToStay’s mission.

How Salons Can Get Involved

We would love for CP Salons to participate in our fundraising efforts! The HairToStay 1000 Club is a fundraising campaign designed specifically for the haircare industry and open to salons across the U.S. Throughout the year, salon owners and stylists host fundraisers to raise $1,000 (the approximate cost of a Scalp Cooling Treatment) or more. Some salons choose a particular month, like October, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month — while others fundraise all year long! Your fundraising efforts will directly benefit cancer patients in keeping their hair during cancer treatment.

Talking to Clients During Their Cancer Journey

When a client comes to your salon with news of a cancer diagnosis, it is often difficult to find the right words. It is the part of behind-the-chair life that makes and morphs your role as both a hair health expert and your client’s confidant into a unique intersection of empathy and education; altruism and advice. Here are some things to consider…

  • KNOW
Cancer conversations and hair health during cancer treatments are an area that clients often look to their stylist for support and advice.
  • REMEMBER
Ensuring you are in a good space with time to connect is a foundation for these delicate interactions. Sometimes a client may prefer to talk in a quieter, more private space with you versus the loud, public and shouting-over-dryers a typical salon environment. Or, they may want to talk without looking in the mirror. Consider that they may prefer to text or call after-hours as an alternative to a face-to-face conversation. Make yourself available and be sensitive to their needs and privacy preferences.
  • LEARN
Educating yourself on options for your clients is key. It can be as simple as recommending Biorepair® Thicken Collection to promote optimum hair and scalp conditions. Or, steer them toward HairToStay to learn more about the Scalp Cooling which can reduce hair loss during cancer treatment.
  • THOUGHTFULNESS
Even offering small, additional back-bar services like a short/simple head and neck massage or a facial steam are ways we can pamper your clients during this challenging season. A small, inexpensive bouquet of supermarket flowers, an extra drink from the salon beverage bar, or a snack you know they’d love during their visit are other ways to share caring and kindness.

Your client is lucky to have you. And we are lucky to be a part of their lives during this journey.

Whether you are a Colorproof stylist, fan or client, we appreciate your support in our partnership with HairToStay. Together we can make a difference.

Xx,

Colorproof
