In a fast-paced world where catching a break is harder than ever, Sunday resets are a sacred time for rest and recovery. The best Sunday rest routines, of course, include some time for self-care.
While self-care looks different for everyone, here at Colorproof, there’s one self-care routine we can all get behind: pampering our hair.
After all, the only downside of living colorfully is a bit of stress on your strands – but that’s nothing some hair care TLC can’t fix!
Ready for a cozy color-treated hair routine perfect for this fall’s self-care Sundays? No matter your cut, color, or texture, here’s how we recommend nurturing your hair this season.
Self-Care Sundays: Hair Mask Routines for Color-Treated Hair this Fall
Does color-treated hair need special treatment?
In short, yes! Expressing yourself through colorful hair is an amazing feeling, but maintaining hair health gets a bit more complicated once you start coloring your hair.
Because the dyeing process can leave the structure of your strands vulnerable to dryness, breakage, and fading, color-treated hair needs special treatment on two fronts.
First, hair health. Both bleach and the chemicals in hair dye open up the hair cuticle, making it more prone to moisture loss and damage from heat and environmental factors. Most people with colored hair need to target hydration and breakage – two issues that can actually worsen as temperatures drop in the fall and winter.
Second, color vibrancy. Although we wish they were, hair dye and toner aren’t permanent! To maintain vibrant color and keep your hair feeling soft and healthy, it’s essential to use products specifically designed for color-treated hair.
By locking in moisture, protecting against UV rays, and preventing color from dulling, everything in the Colorproof collection is designed to enhance hair color! We go beyond color preservation to boost color vibrancy, making us a partner in crime for color enthusiasts around the globe.
Our goal is simple: to simplify color-treated hair care so you can live colorfully, stress free!
The benefits of hair masks for color-treated hair
The key to healthy hair color is using color-safe products from start to finish, but one treatment rises above the rest: the hair mask.
A nourishing mask delivers intense hydration, repairs damaged cuticles, and reduces breakage – in other words, addressing the top concerns associated with color-treated hair.
A high-quality hair mask will also replenish lost moisture, restore elasticity, and help seal the cuticle, locking in color and shine. When used at least once a week, hair masks can also create a protective barrier against environmental aggressors, preserving the vibrancy and health of your hair for longer.
What mask is best for my hair?
To choose the perfect mask for your hair needs, consider what troubles you about your hair the most (or what your colorist suggests you work on!).
At Colorproof, we have four purpose-built hair masks that target different hair concerns.
For dry, brittle hair in need of some luster, the Moisture Masque offers a nourishing boost of hydration, restoration, and protection. It leaves hair feeling softer, shinier, and smoother! It also helps protect against future dryness-related damage while prolonging the life and vibrancy of hair color.
For frizzy hair lacking fluidity and shine, Cuticle Closer can save the day! Designed to seal and resurface your hair at a cellular level, this liquid rinse-out formula effectively smooths strands for more slip, silkiness, and gloss.
For damaged hair that could use a reset, the Instant Reboot Treatment Masque is a fan favorite. It’s a two-step formula, so it goes the extra mile to infuse hair with hydration and nutrients to fortify, revive, and repair – often with instant results.
If you’re concerned about hair health and brassiness, the ultra-pigmented, purple Weekly Blonde Masque is for you. In addition to nourishing and revitalizing strands, it neutralizes brassy tones without over-toning. It also targets dryness and damage caused by lightening!
This time of year, Moisture Masque and Cuticle Closer are especially helpful for fighting hair woes associated with colder weather.
How to prep your hair for a hair mask
Ready to make the most of your Sunday hair treatment?
For the best hair mask results, start by washing your hair with a gentle color-safe shampoo. This removes build-up along the scalp and strands and opens the cuticle for effective treatment.
We always recommend selecting a shampoo aligned with your hair health goals! Dry, unruly hair will benefit from Moisture Shampoo and Smooth Shampoo, flat and thinning hair will appreciate Volume Shampoo and Biorepair Thicken Shampoo, and damaged hair pairs well with Baobab Recovery Shampoo and Clear It Up® Shampoo.
After shampooing, gently towel dry your hair until it’s damp but not soaking wet. This helps the mask penetrate more deeply!
Next, use a wide-tooth comb to detangle any knots and divide your hair into sections for more even application.
You’ve now created the perfect foundation for your hair to work its magic!
Tips for a perfect hair mask routine
Now that you’re ready for your mask, begin by applying it from mid-length to ends, as these areas typically need the most nourishment.
Some masks like the Weekly Blonde Masque can be applied at the root level, while others shouldn’t reach the scalp – always read the directions to get the placement right!
The directions will also reveal how long to leave your mask on. All Colorproof masks only need about 3 minutes to treat your strands, but many other brands need up to 20 minutes.
Most importantly, don’t leave them on longer than recommended; doing so may coat the cuticle with too much product, making it more difficult for stylists to deposit color during your next appointment.
When it’s time to rinse, use cool water to seal the cuticle and lock in moisture. Finish by gently towel drying and styling as desired.
Consistency makes hair masks more effective, so repeat these steps every Sunday!
We can’t wait to see how your hair mask routine transforms your hair this season! Don’t forget to share the results from your self-care Sundays with Colorproof on Instagram and TikTok with the hashtag #ColorproofHair.
See you there.
