We’ve officially reached the halfway point of winter! Warmer days lie ahead, but after months of chilly weather (and a few more storms in the forecast), now is not the time to let winter dryness get the best of you. Ready to finish the season strong on a hydrated note?
As always, Colorproof is here to help with science-backed formulas that promote hair health and preserve the pop of your latest and greatest hair color! With the right routine and intentional ingredients, we believe you can get the best of both worlds—no color sacrifice required.
Here’s the Colorproof guide to rehydrating dry winter hair in just a few simple steps.
If anything in a blue bottle catches your eye, act fast! Now through February 10th, we’re celebrating our Beat the Winter Blues sale with 25% OFF the Essentials Collection.
Colorproof’s Solutions for Dry, Brittle Strands
Get a quick trim
You know those split ends you can’t stop staring at? They aren’t just annoying on a surface level—they also make your hair weaker! In fact, they’re the driest part of your hair. And when the split widens, it leaves the entire shaft more prone to all-over dryness!
So, although the salon is our favorite place to try out a flashy new color, it’s also important to stop by for simple trims between color sessions. In addition to newfound moisture, you’ll also love how much more manageable and durable your strands feel throughout the season.
Wash and touch your hair less often
No one loves greasy roots, but reducing the frequency of your wash days does more than prolong the life of your color. It also makes your hair more hydrated in the long run by allowing your scalp to retain its healthy natural oils!
If you can’t stand the root build-up between washes, remember to touch your hair as little as possible. Even when your hands are clean, your skin can transfer its own oils to your strands, worsening existing greasiness.
However, if you absolutely must wash your hair on a daily basis, don’t worry—all of our shampoos, from Volume Shampoo to Smooth Shampoo to Baobab Recovery Shampoo, are safe for daily use.
Pro-tip: Clear It Up® Shampoo is perfect for a scalp reset on wash days. It removes root build-up to refresh your color and deep clean your roots!
Swap out your dehydrating shampoo
No matter how often you wash your hair, everyone dealing with winter dryness must be picky about their shampoo’s ingredients. Sulfates, salts, and alcohols (unfortunately common shampoo ingredients) are inherently dehydrating, so avoiding them is essential for dehydrated hair!
Luckily, every single Colorproof shampoo is formulated without these drying ingredients. And our Moisture Shampoo is, of course, powered by hydration-focused ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid and Pro-Vitamin B5 Panthenol.
To truly beat winter hair woes, don’t just swap your dehydrating shampoo for a safe option—choose a hydration-focused formula that covers your moisture bases from root to end.
Schedule time for twice-weekly hair masks
For some of us, remembering to use a hair mask is like remembering to floss; you know you should do it regularly, but somehow, you can never stick to the routine.
If that sounds like you, now is the time to change your ways! Whether you need to add it to your personal calendar or allot time for longer showers, making a hair mask a twice-weekly habit will transform your moisture levels.
Our favorite formula for this goal is our Instant Reboot Treatment Masque. This zero-fuss, 2-step treatment helps to nourish, replenish, and instantly transform damaged hair, making it the perfect go-to for the colder months.
Avoid harsh brushing
Another small habit to consider tweaking is how and when you brush your hair. More specifically, don’t brush dry hair unnecessarily, and when you do, avoid rough, harsh brush strokes. This will reduce hair breakage, ultimately reducing your strands’ susceptibility to dryness.
As a rule of thumb, wet hair is safer to brush and comb! We also recommend using a gentle brush like our Bamboo Detangle Brush or CP Detangling Comb — both enable safer, smoother brushing to promote moisture retention.
Love your leave-in
We could go on and on about the importance of leave-ins, but today, we’ll focus on their hydrating properties!
Whether your hair is damp or dry, about to be styled or mid-air-dry, the Essential Leave-In fortifies and repairs your moisture levels for all-day hydration. It also minimizes static, improves slip, and shields against heat damage, acting as a protective barrier between you and winter dryness.
In other words, there are no excuses: if you’re not using Essential Leave-In or a similar treatment, you’re missing out on the simplest, fastest hydration protection method!
If you plan on blow drying and styling your hair post-shower, Plush Locks Leave-In Smooth is another great leave-in option. A stylist favorite, this silky-smooth formula defies dryness with a nourishing blend of Abyssinian and Camellia oils for a luminous finish. It also shields against heat tools, making it a holistic hydration solution.
Embrace oils
Speaking of nourishing oils, our final recommendation is simple: incorporate moisturizing oils whenever possible! Whether as a finisher on freshly styled hair, a leave-in on damp strands, or a pick-me-up on dry locks, Smooth Drops is the perfect featherlight oil treatment for mid-winter dryness.
We also love its Level-5 shine! Just a dash or two is all you need for an extra boost of luster, vitality, and color protection.
Happy hydrating, everyone! Don’t forget to explore our Essentials collection now through February 10th for 25% OFF with our Beat the Winter Blues sale.
